What is the difference between dockless and station-based bike share?
Station-based bike share has specific docking stations for the bike share bikes to lock to that are placed throughout a city. Users can use a kiosk at the station or their own card or key to unlock a bike, ride it to the station nearest to their final destination, and lock the bike at the station. This is the type of bike share you see in New York, Washington D.C., and Kansas City, and has been the dominant form of bikeshare over the last several years.
Dockless bike share does not require a docking station. Bicycles can be parked at any public bike rack or on the sidewalk between the main walking area and the road, out of the way of people walking. The bikes lock to themselves rather than to a bike rack - there is a clamp that locks the back wheel of the bike so it can't be rolled away.
What about theft?
Bikeshare bikes are equipped with GPS locators to reduce theft, and to make the bikes' location show up on a smart phone app. Users make an account online or on the app which is tied to a user’s credit card. Furthermore, most bikeshare bikes are made with anti-graffiti paint, patented parts, and specialty tools.
Who uses bike share?
Bikeshare is a convenient way for local residents, office workers, commuters, college students, and tourists to quickly travel from one place to another by combining foot, bike and/or public transportation. Users choose to ride a bike share bike to avoid the hassle and cost of parking and to avoid congestion. Users take bike share bikes for everyday trips such as going to lunch, meeting with friends at a coffee shop, or to get from public transit to work. Bikeshare is really for everyone – with one caveat: mainly because of liability and payment requirements, most bikeshare systems require users to be 16 years or older.
Where will bikeshare be located in St. Tammany Parish?
The primary focus area for this study will be in municipalities of Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Madisonville, Lacombe, and Slidell. Through this study process the fleet size, service area, and if a phased implementation approach is appropriate will be determined.
We will start by evaluating the central corridor areas of each community, and connectivity points, where there is a higher density of workers, residents, institutions, tourism and entertainment destinations are already developed.
